Emma Roberts on Her Winter Weather Wardrobe and Holiday Wishlist
You were quite the kindred spirit in The Art of Getting By. Is that how you are, too?
Yeah, that’s why I love Sally. She portrayed girls at that age in an honest way. She wasn’t the popular girl, but she also wasn’t nerd. Not a lot of movies do that. She comes off as a kindred spirit because she’s a young girl but she’s very independent.
You’ve been in several great movies this year. What’s next?
I’m in a movie called Celeste and Jesse Forever, and Rashida Jones and Andy Samburg star in it. I play a pop star, which was really fun and totally different. I could just kind of make up a character. We took the stereotype and made it funny.
You spend a lot of time in both New York and LA. How does your style change by location?
In New York, I wear jackets and coats all the time. In LA, I wear a lot of flats and boots with jeans. I have a really cool pair of Alexander Wang flats that have a tiny heel, and a pair of Miu Miu mary janes that look so cute with everything, even just jeans and a white t-shirt. I also love boots and wear them every day—I love knee high boots, ankle boots, high heel boots. My fall purchase was Isabel Marant ankle boots with the heel. And I love Frye Boots because they go with everything and last forever.
The holidays are coming up! What’s on your wishlist?
It’s so funny, I always want everything and then the holidays come along and I can’t think of one thing. I haven’t been wanting anything in particular lately. I love vintage stuff so I tell my mom to get cool jewelry and t-shirts. I’ve considered buying myself a new Proenza Schouler PS1 bag. I have one, but I’ve spilled on it so much, it’s a wreck.
Who are your favorite designers and labels?
Elizabeth and James has cute casual stuff, but then you can find amazing dresses for events, too. I love Topshop because they have everything from dresses to pajamas. And Miu Miu, because they have such girlie things. Definitely my style. I have this great pair of black thick tights with really subtle glitter all over by them.
What’s your can’t-live-without-it item?
I have this leopard scarf that I wear literally 24/7. I got it a few years ago. I realized that leopard really is a neutral lately—it goes with everything!
What five things are always in your purse?
My iPod, because I’m always traveling. I spend so much time on planes and I need to tune out. My iPhone to keep in touch with friends. Always perfume; my Marc by Marc Jacobs roller ball because I can bring it on the plane. A mini can of hairspray, because I just got my hair cut. And then mascara, I’m a Neutrogena girl and love the Healthy Lengths mascara.
Speaking of your iPod, what are you listening to right now?
Rihanna and Coldplay have been on repeat for awhile, and I love the soundtrack to Like Crazy. Both the score and soundtrack are amazing.
What are you watching right now?
I stayed up until 3 a.m. watching Revenge, I watched six episodes on Hulu last night. I also watch American Horror Story. And I really like Millionaire Matchmaker, I have to be honest.
You mentioned that you just chopped off your hair. How did that happen?
I was on a shoot, and we had just finished it. I had been toying with the idea for awhile, I was like, you know what, let’s just do it. It’s hard to make long hair look good when you just wake up. It always looked so ratty when I slept on it, and now I get out of the shower and go.
What’s on your nails at the moment?
Nothing! I’ve been so lazy, but my favorite nail color for fall is navy blue because it looks good with everything. I use Essie a lot.
