CURRENT PROJECTS

Joe Manganiello, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin & more join Scream Queens

HOLLYWOOD – “Scream Queens,” which begins production soon in New Orleans, has added Joe Manganiello (“True Blood”), Lea Michele (“Glee”), Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Keke Palmer (“Madea’s Family Reunion”) to its cast, the Fox network announced Saturday (Jan. 17) at the Winter TV Tour. Previously announced cast members are Emma Roberts (“American Horror Story”) and Jamie Lee Curtis (“Halloween”).

Ariana Grande was announced as a “Scream Queens” guest star in a recurring role.

A comedy-horror anthology series covering 15 episodes, “Scream Queens” is slated for a fall slot on Fox’s schedule. The series comes from “Glee” creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven” and “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” also from Murphy, both were filmed in New Orleans.

“Ryan has proven over the years that he has just great instincts for building characters that people just care about and fall in love with,” said Gary Newman, co-chair and CEO of Fox Television Group. “He brings an outrageousness to what he does that I think is his kind of unique signature.”

Noting that the first season of “Scream Queens” will be set in a sorority house, Newman said that Murphy is “literally the perfect person to be doing this.”

Murphy has assembled his cast so far without sending out scripts — to either the actors or the network.

Murphy has assembled his cast so far without sending out scripts — to either the actors or the network.

“They’re primarily coming to work for Ryan, and Ryan is, I’m sure, sitting with them and talking to them about what the characters are going to be and what they’re going to do,” Newman said. “But we’re not sending out scripts at this point.

“There are several scripts, which we have not yet read, but will be reading shortly.”

Newman was asked how Murphy will modulate the dark “Horror Story” vision — as seen on cable’s FX – for Fox’s broadcast audience.

“Obviously, there are different standards for what you can do on FX and what you can do on Fox,” Newman said. “But Ryan proved on ‘Glee’ (that) he can tell very edgy stories that have real cultural resonance on network television, and I expect him to do that with ‘Scream Queens.’

“I think it’s going to be an amazing, suspenseful, fun ride.”
