This film was shot in 2010 and premiered at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival then went into another editing process and finally found a distribution deal earlier this year.
Written and directed by Dustin Lance Black (MILK), VIRGINIA stars Jennifer Connelly in the title role as a beautiful yet unhinged single mother who struggles to raise her son Emmett (Harrison Gilbertson) while dreaming of escaping her small Southern boardwalk town. Her long time affair with the very married, Mormon Sheriff Richard Tipton (Ed Harris) is thrown into question when he decides to run for public office. Things are further complicated when Emmett begins a romantic relationship with Tipton’s daughter (Emma Roberts). Virginia and the town–populated by Amy Madigan, Toby Jones, Yeardley Smith–are full of secrets and everyone knows Virginia can only keep things together for so long. VIRGINIA is a funny, touching drama that looks at the American Dream and what it takes to keep it together.

“If I’m having a really bad day, I always have a girlfriend — or even a guy friend — who I can call,” the actress, 21, told Us Weekly Wednesday while promoting Seventeen’s Pretty Amazing contest in NYC. “They’ll listen to me wallow for a minute and then be like, ‘OK, let’s stop. Everything’s great. Let’s figure out how to fix whatever’s bothering you.'”
“I’ve gone through times where you’re feeling low and you don’t reach out to people and you just keep wallowing in that, and I think that’s when things turn into a bigger deal than they need to be,” she explained. “I think it’s important to have people who will pull you out of that, whether it’s family or friends.”
The Scream 4 actress teamed up with Seventeen for its second annual Pretty Amazing contest, which asks young girls to share their stories of personal achievement for the chance to appear on the cover of the magazine’s October 2012 issue. The winner will also receive a $20,000 scholarship, courtesy of Neutrogena.
“It’s a cool contest because even the girls who don’t win, the fact that they took the time to sit down and think about something that’s great about themselves, I think takes a lot,” Roberts, who will help choose the winner, told Us. “A lot of people think that comes off as bragging and they want to [downplay their story]. So I think the fact that these girls are saying, ‘I did do something cool and I am good at this’ is really admirable.” (For more details on Roberts’ involvement in Seventeen’s Pretty Amazing contest click here.)
Roberts, who recently wrapped production on the dark comedy Adult World with John Cusack, will begin filming Empire State with Liam Hemsworth, 22, “in the next month or so.”
“It’s really cool — like an ’80s heist movie,” Roberts said of her new project. “I’m really excited about that. I play his love interest.”
“Scream 4″ star Emma Roberts is joining the cast of Dito Montiel’s heist drama “Empire State,” which stars Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson.
Based on true events that took place in 1982, Adam Mazer’s script finds Hemsworth playing one of two childhood friends from Astoria, New York who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Johnson playing the NYPD detective who’ll stop at nothing to bust them.
Roberts will play a waitress who serves as a potential love interest for Hemsworth’s character.
Randall Emmett and George Furla’s Emmett/Furla Films is financing the film, which the duo will produce with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films. Production is skedded to start this spring.
Roberts, who recently appeared in back-to-back Sundance pics “The Art of Getting By” and “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” is currently filming Scott Coffey’s indie comedy “Adult World” with John Cusack and Evan Peters.
Roberts is repped by CAA, Sweeney Entertainment and attorney Neil Meyer.
